How to complete the forms

Vision and hearing exams

You need to submit the following two forms to your Recruiting Analyst on request. The forms must be received before to your medical assessment.

  • Vision exam
  • Hearing exam

Note

The results of these exams are valid for 2 years. Applicants must pay for vision and hearing exams. These costs are not reimbursed.

Vision exam

The vision exam and form (Vision Examination of Applicant (RCMP 2180) must be completed by a Canadian optometrist/ophthalmologist.

If you've had laser eye surgery, you must wait before completing a vision exam:

  • LASIK (Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis): 30 days
  • PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy): 90 days
  • ICL, POL (Implanted corrective lenses with anterior chamber lens): 6 months
  • ICL, POL (Implanted corrective lenses with posterior chamber lens): 12 months
  • SMILE (Small incision lenticule extraction): 30 to 90 days
  • SBK (Sub-bowman's keratomileusis): 30 days

Visual acuity

You'll need to meet both corrected and uncorrected vision standards. If you fail one or both, you don't meet the minimum vision requirements for regular member applicants.

Minimum vision requirements:

  • Corrected vision (with glasses or contacts): Visual acuity must be at least 6/6 (20/20) in one eye and 6/9 (20/30) in the other; and
  • Uncorrected vision (without glasses or contacts lenses): Visual acuity must be at least 6/18 (20/60) in each eye or 6/12 (20/40) in one eye and at least 6/30 (20/100) in the other eye

This minimum vision acuity is required for safe performance of policing duties if glasses or contacts are lost or displaced.

Field of vision

You must have a field of vision that is at least 150 degrees. It must be continuous along the horizontal meridian and 20 degrees continuous above and below fixation with both eyes open and examined together.

Colour vision testing

We test colour vison using the standardized Ishihara pseudo-isochromatic plates. To pass, you must correctly identify at least 17 of 21 patterns.

If required, further evaluation will be conducted using the Farnsworth D-15 test. If you pass, you meet the minimum colour vision standard.

Ocular disease

You must not have any ocular (eye) diseases that impair your vision. We may ask for more information during your health assessment.

Hearing exam

You cannot use a hearing aid during the exam. The minimum requirements are listed below.

An audiologist must test the following frequencies:

  • 500 Hz
  • 1,000 Hz
  • 2,000 Hz
  • 3,000 Hz
  • 4,000 Hz
  • 6,000 Hz
  • 8,000 Hz

The hearing exam and form (Regular Member Applicant Hearing Examination Report (RCMP 6509)) must be completed by a practitioner in accordance with the Canadian Standards Association Standard on Pure Tone Air Conduction Audiometers for Hearing Conservation and for Screening.

Minimum hearing standards

  • In your better ear: between 500 and 3000 Hz with no more than 30 decibels of hearing loss
  • In your worse ear: 3000 Hz with no more than 50 decibels of hearing loss

Security screening application

You must complete an online Security Screening Application, accessed through GCKey. GCKey is a service provided by the Government of Canada that allows you to securely access programs and services. If selected, we will send you instructions on how to create your GCKey and submit your personal information through the online Security Screening Application.

Additional guidance on completing forms

Review these considerations to make sure your forms and documents are completed and submitted correctly:

  • Complete the forms electronically, print them and sign them · Some forms require initials which can only be signed once the form has been printed
  • Submit your forms and documentation electronically, based on instructions provided. Hand delivered, mailed or emailed packages will not be accepted
  • Retain original copies of all forms for your records. You may be asked to provide printed copies to authenticate your documentation
  • Use the following date format: YYYY/MM/DD
  • Incorrect or incomplete forms may cause a considerable delay in your recruiting process and may lead to your file being closed
